Concrete Sealer is used to maintain and protect concrete, to give it a beautiful look and feel even after many years of its life. Contrary to its appearance, concrete happens to be a porous material. This means that it can absorb a lot of materials such as chlorides, stains and water. However, it is water that wreaks the most damage, as it loosens the tiles. Using Concrete Sealer ensures that the penetration of these intruders is stopped without bringing about any stoppage on the breathing of the concrete itself. The presence of water also promotes the growth of mold, mildew and algae. However, Concrete Sealer takes care of all this, as it helps in prevention of water retention.
Concrete Sealers can be classified as film formers and penetrants. Film formers, as the name suggests, act by forming a film on the concrete surface. However, the film formers also lend a beautifying effect on the concrete. There are also film formers that lend a perfect glossy finish or a satin finish. The penetrants, on the other hand, don't bring about any change in the appearance of the concrete surface. The penetrants actually enter the surface of the concrete to increase its resistance to water, thereby minimizing stains on account of having water.
Acrylic, silicone, silane, siloxane, resin, or wax forms the building material of these sealers. Although the aim behind getting a sealer is to have a concrete surface with a beautiful finish that lasts, an inferior quality sealer might just accomplish the opposite. It may lead to a discoloration of the cement, or spoil the texture of it.
It is quite important to choose a sealer with care, as there are certain sealers that lead to the discoloration of the cement, or mar its beauty by giving it an unattractive appearance. The usage of a good Concrete Sealer can also work wonders for the life of lower-quality concrete.
